After volunteering at the gift wrapping counter at Carefour for 3 hours yesterday, I can finally understand the stress of being a “gift wrapper”. I used to think that it is an interesting and fun thing to do gift wrapping for customers as I have always enjoy doing gift wrapping. But after yesterday’s experience, I can tell you that it is definitely not as easy as I thought, especially with the customers standing right beside “eyeing” on you while waiting for their presents to be wrapped and the long queue of people standing behind them. And, the large and irregular sizes of most of their presents made it even more challenging for us.

Within this short period of 3 hours, I have actually come across various types of people...

The Thankful Appreciator
- Generally they are quite appreciative of your efforts in wrapping and a simple compliment from them saying that the presents are very nicely done up really makes your day. However, I personally dun think the presents are very nicely wrap due to the time and space constrain, but I must say that we have all given our best shot within this limited amount of time we have and it definitely feels great that your efforts are being appreciated.

The Silent Companion
- Usually they will just stand beside you and wait patiently while their presents are being wrapped. No, they won’t say much, they will just give a smile or a simple word of thank you when their presents are done, but I feel that this is more than enough already.

The Personal Assistant
- This is a helpful lot who will attempt to help you in doing the wrapping, be it that we are too slow or they simply just want to lend a helping hand. But we are indeed very grateful for their help.

The Unreasonable Rusher
- This is a nasty group of people who will throw you presents like a super huge soft toy about the size of 1m length and 50cm width and expect you to be able to wrap it in like a few minutes. While we are trying hard to think of a way to wrap that gigantic toy, they will keep rushing you saying that they are in a rush for time and ask us to speed up. Eventually when the present is finally done up, they even make nasty remark about poor customer services being provided and threatened to make a complaint. Come on, we are only volunteers and we are not professionals in gift wrapping, don’t you think that they are asking for too much? If they are really so pressed for time, then they can jolly well get the wrappers and wrap it themselves. Or if they think that we are not doing a good job, then they can do the wrapping themselves. Sometimes it just takes one of such comments to really spoil your day.

The Sincere Trier
- Their wrapping skills may not be very good, quite untidy sometimes, with pieces of wrappers joined together, but u really can’t bear to reprimand them when you see their sincerity in trying to do a good job. I guess it’s really not easy for anyone who’s new in gift wrapping to pick up the skill in such a short and rush period of time.

On the whole, I must say that this is indeed a great experience, though it’s not exactly as fun as I originally thought it would be, but it’s definitely something worth experiencing...
